BOISE, IDAHO (Enviro Snowflake Brief)— Governor Brad Little announced a state of emergency for Idaho after a report by a hunter in the LoLo National Forest claiming he spotted one gray wolf (alive).
New legislation signed by Governor Little in May allows professional hunters and trappers to use helicopters, snowmobiles, ATVs, night vision equipment, snares, killing puppies in dens, and other means, to kill 90% of the state’s wolves. In short, they want wolves gone.
At a rushed press conference this morning declaring a “state of emergency,” Gov. Little assured the wolf hating, anti-science, right wing ranchers and hunters in the state, “As Governor, I am ‘Johnny on the spot’ to address this concerning field report. We understand if there is one wolf still in the LoLo National Forest then there are a 1,000 more outside Boise.”
“We want to assure students at Timberline High School in Boise, and all kids around the state, wolf puppies will be ‘managed’ humanely as we achieve our goals,” stated the Governor.
Demonstrating how collaborative Republican governors can be to help each other out, Gov. Little announced Florida Gov. DeSantis has offered to send a battalion of his newly created Florida State Guard to hunt wolves on federal public lands in Idaho. The Idaho Legislature is convening an emergency session in order to reallocate funds from the K-12 education budget to the Idaho Wolf Depredation Control Board ($590,000 taxpayer money), a war chest for killing wolves.
House Speaker, Scott Bedke (R) assured Idaho parents, in spite of the National Education Association ranking Idaho dead last in per student funding, “Once wolves are dealt with thanks to Gov. DeSantis loaning us his Florida State Guard, Idaho education will be funded again to its robust 2021 levels.” According to the national rankings, Idaho invested $7,705 per student in the 2019–2020 school year, which is a similar cost to the state funding the killing of two wolves.
America’s demonization and slaughter of wolves has been going on for centuries, which is fed by myths, fairytales, and well-funded ranchers and hunters lining the pockets of politicians. The new assault on wolves in Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming is quite transparent to push this valuable predator to the brink of extinction once again in the lower 48. Will the federal government step in or not… that is the question?
Idaho is betting not and so far, that bet looks good.
