BOISE, Idaho (Enviro Snowflake Brief)— Idaho Governor, C.L. “Butch” Otter, was clearly depressed when he responded to the news that federal safeguards for grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem were reinstated last night. A Montana federal judge ruled that the Trump administration’s decision to strip Endangered Species Act protections from the population was illegal.
Gov. Otter spoke on the steps of the Capital to explain how his office would try and calm the outrage, and offer solace, to his core constituency feeling sad today.
“Idaho ranchers, and our beloved sportsmen are outraged that a federal judge would dare use “SCIENCE” to reverse the grizzly delisting, which now stops our planned hunt this month. Although we only had an allotment of one male grizzly to kill this fall, our plans were to use GoPro cameras on the hunters and run it live on all Sinclair Broadcast owned Idaho stations sponsored by Cabela,” explained Otter.
Governor Otter said to compensate for the cancelled grizzly hunt, he would ask the state House to take $100,000 from the education fund in order to increase the Wolf Depredation Control Board.
“These funds will focus on hiring sportsmen, not Wildlife Services, to kill wolves ranchers have detected as causing hurt feelings and mental stress on identified cattle,” according to the Governor.
The Governor unleashed some tweets after getting some pushback on the wolf plan.
“For those who are concerned about additional budget cuts to Idaho’s K-12 education don’t be. Idaho ranks 48th among all states so that is a money pit, and again, the Courts used science against us here,” ranted the Governor.
Later in the morning, Otter tweeted more encouragingly:
“Idaho is neck and neck with Wyoming to be the #1 state killing wolves. Let’s do this and not look back to the grizzly hunt that could have been.”
